The Halfway to Heaven family would like to introduce our newest additions...

Jackpot

Butterscotch

IMG_9255.jpeg

Jackpot is a seven-year-old (2024) Pinto Mustang gelding from the Diamond HMA in Nevada. He was captured as a three-year-old and adopted by his first owner the following year. Since then, he has been passed around multiple times to numerous trainers who physically abused him. While we won't go into the details, the abuse was sometimes horrific. When we saw Jackpot posted for free on Facebook, we knew he was at high risk of heading down the slaughter pipeline. Through generous donations from our incredible supporters, we were able to have Jackpot vetted, vaccinated and a Coggins test drawn for transportation. He arrived here at the end of June 2024. We've seen progress with our training methods and look forward to a bright future for Jackpot

Butterscotch is a four-year-old Sorrel with a flaxen mane and tail,  gelding from Oregon's Sheepshead/Heath Creek HMA. He came to us from the Stroud, Oklahoma, kill pen. He was an unnamed, unwanted Mustang. We will never understand how someone could send him there. When we saw him, we knew we had to save him. Butterscotch came to us via a private transporter on a freezing cold January night. Although he had been with an adopter for over a year and a half, he was terrified of humans. He has proven to be a brilliant horse. He thrives on his Positive Reinforcement training and begs to be trained. He has come such a long way. It's hard to get away from him. He follows us everywhere like a sweet little puppy dog. In 2025, he will likely be started under saddle.

June 2023 - Our Rescue has Moved!

Halfway to Heaven Equine Rescue has moved from Virginia to beautiful Aiken, South Carolina! In the late spring/early summer 2023, we made the decision to move our rescue to a warmer climate were the horses (and ourselves) would not have to deal with so much mud and freezing temperatures in the winter. We researched many areas, but decided that the climate, friendly people, and the horse community made Aiken the perfect place for our rescue.

After learning more about Aiken we realized it was the “real deal.” It's not a  horse-themed tourist attraction, but an authentic South Carolina equestrian community rich in historic charm and tradition. Because of its world-class equine facilities and appealing climate, Aiken hosts equestrian events almost year-round. Although the town leans heavily towards sports like polo, eventing, jumping, dressage and fox hunting, we felt secure that the community would welcome our rescue with its focus on the American Mustang with open arms.

Aiken has historic Hitchcock Woods, a 2,100 acre tract of forest with 70 miles of trails that are accessible just outside of downtown Aiken. We knew this would provide us with a beautiful place to trail ride our rescue horses.

Visitors to our rescue from out of town will enjoy the community here. Downtown Aiken is a haven for a variety of eclectic eateries, galleries, and shops. A popular gathering spot, "The Alley,” can be found just off Laurens Street, home to a cluster of delicious restaurants and great gatherings with food and live music on Thursday evenings.

Our new farm has beautiful open fields with run-in sheds and plenty of space for the horses to run wide open. We have a very nice riding ring to train the horses. The horses also have plenty of shade in the wooded area on the property. In 2024 we plan to continue to get settled into the new property, and begin to make headway building a new barn and storage areas for tack, feed and hay.
